Holy crap! I'm listening to the Typical Orchestra CD and loving it. It blows the carbon out of the engine, and generally cleans the universe of Kenny G and Britney Spears molecues, at least for a few hours.

Thanks John.

wonderful hearing Dream Kitchen at the Berkeley Library the other evening- was a great way to disturb the library's peace and quiet.

Also, was quite taken with Mr. Benedict's vocal stylings- a google search brought some strange results: vocalist, physicist & ping pong competitor?

Bought the Typical Orchestra cd afterward, & am knocked out.....beeeautiful stuff- any chance T.O. performing live sometime?

thanks for the great music..

You think you are Angels

One November day, long ago
my ex-girlfriend and her sister
asked me to lunch

They came over and so
we set out. My stomach aching,
we walked across Dolores Park

It was sort of hazy out, cold
No one was on the tennis courts
or kicking a soccer ball around

We were almost at the other side of the park
when he found us, just some strange old man
staring defiantly

Puffing up his chest
Through a thick accent he said
you think you are Angels
and let us go

as a newcomer to your site (an Elliot Carter connection) I'm still browsing. Perhaps you'd like to expand on Miles Davis, e.g. Filles de Kilamanjaro (1968), one of the last albums of the 2nd Great Quintet. Filles might be considered a Tony Williams concerto. Chick Corea plays electric on two great cuts -Frelon Brun & Mlle Mabry. Possibly among the prettiest recordings ever made by this soulful instrumentalist, these pieces form an odd bookend to the famous Kind of Blue sessions from the previous decade. For Miles Davis, Tony Williams, and Wayne Shorter fans equally.

RE: the acoustic Junk Genius sessions, the reality is, probably never, unless I start my own label, something I'd like to do but have no capital for at the moment. The Typical CD is currently looking for a home. Looking and looking. Everyone's hit hard times lately.
best wishes to all!

Hey John my friend, long time no see. I was checking out your site, and thought i might as well ask a question here! any chance we'll see the release of the acoustic pieces recorded by Junk Genius - Kenny (mentioned on your page a while back)? That would be cool. Hope you're well, and can't wait for the Typical CD! Thanks are due as ever.

Hey - I thought I should wait untill I had three shows worth of responses, for a cross section of Typical Bay Area fans. So on March 30 we're at SF's Hemlock, and shortly after that, say within a week, look for them here, fully tabulated and annotated. Here's a couple choice comments to tide you over:

"Bass clarinet makes me cream!!!" (complete with smiley face)
"Don't experiment with someone else's time!"
"More hornpipes!"
"Papier Mache"

Great show on the 27th at the Great American Music Hall. A beautiful day for some vacationing Midwesterners who tend to gravitate to Chicago and Minneapolis rather than the west coast. What more could we ask for: a trip to City Lights during the day and seeing you guys that night.

Dear Pastor Tim,

gee, thanks for your enthusiasm for a bootleg tape and your wanting to spread it FAR AND WIDE! I guess. No, I enjoy a good bootleg myself now and then, so I have no stones to cast. But is normal to ask the artist for help in figuring out the setlist? I don't know what the setlist was dude, that was three weeks ago! Anyway, it's all the same song anyway :-) Now go listen to Sonny Rollins.

I'm sitting here listening to the 12.27.03 James T. Kirk show -- oops, I mean T.J. Kirk -- @ The Great American Music Hall/San Francisco, CA that a good friend just sent, and I suddenly remembered why this music is so important to me. Thanks to all who made this reunion show happen & I hope James T. Kirk -- er, I mean T.J. Kirk -- will continue to find reasons to get together and play out in public in the future.

And in the hopes that this recording should be spread FAR & WIDE, I could use a little help with the setlist. Drop me a line at . Ahhhh, "Ruby My Dear" just started... wish you could see the ear-to-ear grin on my face right now.

Gratefully,
+ Pastor Tim

Hi John!
I just looked over your website, very informative!
I couldn't find any contact section, so I just wrote through the psychotic section....
I was wondering if I could arrange for a lesson with you. I'm in the Bay area from the may 23rd-may 27th. I'm a professional guitarist myself playing in the Tampa Bay area in a funk/jazz group and I'm always looking for new perspectives and insights. I have the T.J kirk album "if four was six" and really enjoyed the controlled lunacy...:-)
Let me know if you have time in this timespan, I would really enjoy to sit down with you and pick your brain. Thanks in advance, God bless

Hi John,

Allow me to doff my chapeau unto youse for such a comprehensive, informative and entertaining Web site. (If you don't recognize the name, don' worry and here's a hint: Marco Eneidi, Donald Robinson and yourself played our wedding July 3rd, 1999 @ Stern Grove, SF, at which Yers Trooly crooned "Witchcraft." To paraphrase Frank & Sam, never again shall I ever be surrounded by such immensely talented AND beautiful human beings... and I *mean* that, babe. Seriously--it was a great honor to have you there.)

I'm currently in the employ of the Internet directory LookSmart and will make it a point to add your site to our directory posthaste.

I'd like to say I'll be in one of your audiences sometime soon, but the URL provided is responsible for keeping my wife & I very close to the casa these days:

http://www.geocities.com/lukasholoubek/

(Who knows, he may be a student of yours in a decade or so if you're still working that angle. Hell, if he's got half an ear he'll be way beyond my half-assed Beefheartian licks before he's potty trained!)

All the best in your current and future projects, and the very best of luck!

Hello there. I really enjoyed looking over your site - especially the media shrine. If I lived anywhere nearby I think I'd sign up for the guitar lessons. I'd be in the "negotiable" pricing bracket ;)

If I see your "Shuttle Play" around anywhere, I'll pick it up right away. I've read some nice things about it in The Wire.

Sorry for wasting your time.

You need a theory to explain why the finest percussionist since Joe "Mama" Besser is good?
Incidentally: one part Bennick + one part Besser + a sound clobbering with an unwashed skillet = Kenny Wollesen.

But then again, I don't listen to nuthin' but Bjork and Faith No More these days, so what do I know?

Tom Benton <tom@bluenoiseband.com>
Austin, USA - Thursday, November 16, 2000 at 13:09:51 (PST)
Okay, here's my other new theory: Those who aren't in it (music) for the money, that is, who don't want to "make a living at it" - are treated shabbily and with disdain by those who are. Also, I have a theory about why Han Bennink is good.
Dan Plonsey <plonsey@sunra.berkeley.edu>
El Cerrito, USA - Tuesday, October 24, 2000 at 17:29:50 (PDT)
Yeah well, you know gets me about you beatnik types? Your tastes are always so predictable! It's always Xenakis, Feldman, the mittel-europeans like Penderecki, Dimitrescu, anbd Bartok, Webern, and Cage. It always excludes 1) anyone who taught in an American university; 2) Italian composers (except maybe two pieces by Berio); 3) Opera; 4) any music composed between 1775 and 1900; and 5) Reggae. With you guys it's always Beefheart, not Tony Bennett, or Sun Ra but not Son House. If you ask me, it's composers like Cage who made performers into push-buttons, not Babbitt or Carter.
John's response to Igor
USA - Friday, October 06, 2000 at 01:10:13 (PDT)
Have I told you my "push button" theory of composition? It goes like this:
Postwar American serialists conceptualize musicians as devices to be
activated by push button. But as Sun Ra says:
"If they push the button, your ass gotta go!"
